A theater director’s story is tackling the emotional obstacles fathers can face when separated from their children due to divorce or broken relationships.
Teresa Edwards is the writer and director of the play, “Struggles of a Father’s Love” that’s staged at Clayton County Performing Arts Center at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The story follows the character Tony, who is recently discharged from the military and about to become a parent with a woman with whom he is not in a committed relationship. Tony is determined to be in his son’s life unlike his own father, Edwards said.
The play is inspired by her husband, Kyon, who met his father for the first time in 2014. Similarly, Kyon was separated from his own son for years after splitting with the child’s mother, despite efforts to see him, Edwards said.
“This play is an outcry for fathers striving to be present in their children’s lives, navigating through many, many challenges that obstruct their path.” Kyon Edwards said.

Hi Teresa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
What’s my story? Now, that’s a loaded question… to say the least… lol. My story has quite a few pivotal moments where it began again.
Each of these restarts paved the way for my huge imagination, nurturing my passion for storytelling. Growing up as an only child, my escape was through watching television and going to the movies. I would imagine being in the movie or what I would do to make it better. Watching the behind-the-scenes clips was just as, if not more, entertaining than watching the movie.
Despite all the pivots—going into the military, getting married, having a child, and changing careers several times—my love for storytelling never waned. Today, I’m an author, playwright, writer of several movie shorts, actor, director, producer, and the list goes on. I’m currently shooting my first feature film. If it’s part of entertainment, I want to be part of it!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a Black woman raised in the South has presented countless challenges, and it’s disheartening that many of these challenges still persist in 2024. However, what truly matters is how we overcome these obstacles.
Hi Teresa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Atlanta but raised in Florida. I’m an only child and grew up mostly in a single-parent household. My mom worked nights, so I spent a lot of time alone. We lived in a two-bedroom shack infested with rats and snakes until we moved to Miami by the 8th grade. We were extremely poor.
Being an African-American woman born and raised in the deep south brought on many unique challenges. One major challenge was the lack of exposure to opportunities. I was taught to graduate high school and either get a job or go into the military. Graduating from college, being an entrepreneur and an author was never a thought for my future.
Fast forward to the present day; I’m an author, executive producer, music consultant, radio host, and all-around creative guru. I earned an MBA from Kennesaw State University’s Executive MBA program. I’m a retired Air Force veteran with over 21 years’ combined service, where I served globally in many positions and countries. I also co-founded and own Terror Dome Entertainment, LLC, a video and music production company. And also founded Silence the Tears, a non-profit organization that provides financial support for counseling for abused children.
As an author, I’ve written three books. The Adventures of Hildie and Carlos series children’s books. It’s based on the loving relationship between my granddaughter and grand-cat. And Articles of Life: A Collection of Short Memoir Essays of Managing Life. This is a collection of tragic and inspirational events in my life. Despite all the adversities, tragedies, and losses, I’m proud to have raised a very gifted and talented daughter that will soon receive her Doctorate degree from the University of Chicago.
